Lucha Libre became a special part of her life when she met Ángel de Paz, and they started traveling together, experiencing the magic of Lucha Libre. The art form incorporates vibrant, colorful costumes and energetic characters who battle in stories of good versus evil. The tradition brings rich aztec history to life by displaying aztec gods, superheroes, and villains as they wrestle, tumble, and perform.
Artist Statement
Come witness the stories captured within the artwork; each picture offers a unique glimpse into a luchador’s inner conflict as they grapple through the epic stories they enact. The exhibition also features custom made gear including Angel de Paz’s custom made “Winged Mask” which represents the uplifting spirit he received from his Mexican ancestors and El Diablo Vega’s mask which represents the aztec demon warrior that inspired him.
For Ardiana and Ángel art is an integral part of of Lucha Libre both as a means of expression woven through the storytelling and as a means to keep the history and culture alive for others to experience.
About the Artists
Adriana Carbajal Wicker
Adriana is a (mostly) self-taught photographer currently based out of her hometown of Greeley, CO. She has been a photographer her whole life. Her parents met at the Kodak warehouse in Windsor, CO in the 90s. So, it just made sense that their eldest child would spend her life processing the world around her through a camera.
Ángel de Paz
Angel has been an independent luchador for 8 years and has traveled with Adriana over the last 4 years to share the performance art known as Lucha Libre.
